I have seen 3 VPG MV-1's in a span of 2 weeks. I just don’t get it. How does a car so hideous go so long without being seen them come out of hiding so ferociously? Is it MV-1 mating season? Was there a Wyoming, Nevada, and Montana MV-1 meetup? Do they naturally congregate near buffalo in hopes that people will mistake them for rare wildlife and put their picture on Instagram?

I have seen only one of these, and it was so beat it already looked like it was 20 years old. I shuddered, and kept walking

There are a few of them around here in Dubuque. They never fail to catch my eye.

I can’t hate them out of principle.

They’re function>form, that function being transportation for people in wheelchairs.

I actually kind of like them. Much much better looking than most of the options for people who need them.

Also they’re sorta like conversion vans. Ugly, but they aren’t made for looks.

The company had trouble getting going, and pretty much hit the skids a few years ago. Then AM General (the other surviving part of AMC) bought them out and restarted production.

Isn’t that true with most startups, basically just a game of how long you can hold out until someone buys you out? Those that can grow big seem like the exception rather than the norm.

Not always. VPG also had crappy timing, trying to start up in Michigan in the mid-2000s.

Kinda looks like a American LTI TX2 from this angle.

better looking than the typical minivan with a lift kit

Kinja'd!!!

i would hate when these things came in for service. next to impossible to get on a lift. seemed to never have the right adapters to clear the running boards, and the lowered floor always bottomed out on the drive-on lift.

There’s a guy in the next town from me that has a wheelchair van done right. it’s an early 90's E350 with a 4x4 conversion and a 4" lift. looks awesome. he even puts a fisher v-plow on it for winter. i will try to get a photo next time i see it.

They’re not attractive vehicles, but they’re not meant to be. I also can’t hate them out of princicple. People with wheelchairs have enough trouble getting in vehicles as it is.

I have never seen one in person, or at least noticed one. Until today. Saw this post this morning, and then immediately saw one on the way to C&C!

Must be MV-1 mating season. That’s the only valid explanation.

At first I thought it was a really fat Honda Element that someone made. When I realized what it was, my only thought was “Damn it”.

I had to look them up when I first saw one. Nothing to hate, they’re actually pretty cool considering they’re purpose-built. Most vehicles for this purpose are retrofit and therefore have many compromises that this doesn’t.
